At the plate, the two-way superstar went 1 for 3 with two walks and a strikeout Tuesday night in a rainy over the Cleveland Guardians.

The Dodgers have been waiting to see a full-time, two-way version of Ohtani since he joined them on a $700 million, 10-year deal before the 2024 season. He didn’t pitch that year while recovering from a second major elbow surgery in September 2023 while with the Los Angeles Angels.

Last season, the team took a methodical approach to his return to the mound. Ohtani was 1-1 with a 2.87 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 47 innings over 14 starts. His fastball averaged a career-high 98.4 mph.

鈥淟ast year, I felt good,鈥 Ohtani said through a translator. 鈥淏ut this year I do feel a lot more loose and easy pitching overall. Looking back at today鈥檚 outing specifically, that wasn鈥檛 necessarily the case. So that鈥檚 something I want to work on. But compared to last season I felt more loose and easy.鈥

Ohtani was limited to two spring training starts for the Dodgers because he played 鈥 but didn’t pitch 鈥 for Japan in the .

Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts has noticed Ohtani is more critical of himself as a pitcher than a hitter.

鈥淗e鈥檚 never going to be satisfied,鈥 Roberts said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 always something that he can improve on or get better at and that鈥檚 what fuels him.鈥

Ohtani has thrown 22 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings in the regular season, dating to Aug. 27, 2025, against Cincinnati 鈥 the longest shutout streak of his career. He bettered his previous high of 21 2/3 innings set in June 2022 with the Angels.

鈥淚f he鈥檚 able to do it the whole year, that鈥檚 just a huge boost to our pitching staff,鈥 third baseman Max Muncy said. 鈥淚 expect nothing short of almost a Cy Young out of him.鈥

Almost?

鈥淚 think he鈥檚 got enough pressure already,鈥 Muncy said, 鈥渂ut it doesn鈥檛 seem to faze him at all.鈥

The only hit Ohtani allowed was a two-out double by Rhys Hoskins in the fourth. The right-hander struck out six and walked three.

He was even successful on his first ABS challenge.

Ohtani retired his first seven batters before walking Gabriel Arias in the third. With two outs, he walked Steven Kwan to put runners on first and second. Ohtani had a 1-1 count on CJ Kayfus when he challenged a ball call. It was overturned, putting Ohtani ahead 1-2 in the count, and he got Kayfus on a swinging strike with his next pitch to end the third.

Heavy drizzle picked up over Ohtani’s last couple of innings. The grounds crew groomed the front slope of the mound, specifically his landing spot, after he issued his third walk with two outs in the sixth. He used a metal tool to dislodge dirt from the bottom of his spikes. Ohtani then retired Hoskins with one pitch to end the inning.

鈥淗e’s unflappable,鈥 Roberts said.

Offensively, Ohtani has yet to break out in his first five games. The four-time MVP is batting .167 with no home runs and no RBIs. He had 55 homers in 2025.

He extended his on-base streak to 36 games, tying the longest of his career.

鈥淚鈥檝e been able to get on base and that鈥檚 a good thing,鈥 Ohtani said. 鈥淏ut on pitches that I should be making impact I鈥檓 not quite able to do that to the extent that I should be able to. That鈥檚 the part that I鈥檓 not quite happy about.鈥

Observing Ohtani’s work habits on a daily basis has convinced Muncy that his first love is pitching.

鈥淗e’s really bought into everything with pitching 鈥 his mechanics, how to attack hitters. He just focuses on it so much. You can really, really tell he loves it,鈥 Muncy said.

Roberts said Ohtani will get six days’ rest before his next start.

鈥淚 believe the team should be prioritizing Yoshinobu (Yamamoto), (Tyler) Glasnow and (Blake) Snell when he鈥檚 back,鈥 Ohtani said. 鈥淪o I think it鈥檚 easy to kind of fit me into that schedule whenever the team feels that鈥檚 a good thing. What鈥檚 most important is that we鈥檙e all healthy in October.鈥

Iraq beats Bolivia to claim the final place at the 2026 World Cup /sports/2026/04/congo-beats-jamaica-1-0-in-extra-time-to-qualify-for-the-world-cup/ Wed, 01 Apr 2026 07:04:17 +0000 /?p=29101948&preview=true&preview_id=29101948 MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) 鈥 Iraq overcame major logistical issues to become the 48th and final team to secure a spot at the with a 2-1 win over Bolivia in an intercontinental playoff Tuesday, ending a wait of four decades to return to soccer’s marquee global event.

Ali Almahadi opened the scoring in the 18th minute, Moises Paniagua tied it for Bolivia in the 38th and Aymen Hussein scored the clincher in the 53rd minute for Iraq. The Iraq team will join Group I along with France, Norway and Senegal.

鈥淲e have nothing to lose, let鈥檚 try to shock the world with a crazy result and performance. It is great that we qualified,鈥 Iraq coach said. 鈥淚t is a privilege for us.”

Arnold, who guided Australia at the 2022 World Cup, said he didn’t think his Iraqi players had faced the likes of France star Kylian Mbappe or Norway’s Erling Haaland.

“It will be an honor. We respect those players and what they do, but we will try to win.鈥

Iraq will be back at the World Cup for the first time since Mexico 1986, kicking off June 16 against Norway at Foxborough, followed by games against France on June 22 at Philadelphia and Senegal at Toronto on June 26.

Bolivia missed out on qualifying for its second World Cup.

鈥淲hat remains is pain and frustration; we feel devastated by the result,” Bolivia coach Oscar Villegas said. 鈥淭hese young men lost with honor on the field and gave everything to achieve the result, but unfortunately, the country missed out on the World Cup.鈥

The match was played in front of 49,286 fans at the BBVA stadium in Monterrey, one of three host cities in Mexico for the World Cup.

Earlier this month, Iraq faced uncertainty about even been able to contest the playoffs. The war in resulted in Iraqi players being stranded because their country鈥檚 airspace was closed, preventing the team from using commercial flights to leave. Team officials officially asked FIFA to postpone the playoff match.

鈥淓verything that is going on in the Middle East made it a little bit harder but the main thing I said, and I worked very hard on, was their mentality,鈥 Graham said. 鈥淚 banned social media since the day we got here. I did not want them to think of what is going on in the Middle East because they had to focus on the job we had here.鈥

The team also faced because Mexico does not have an embassy in Iraq and players struggled to obtain visas. But the issue was resolved when the Mexico’s foreign affairs ministry facilitated visas at other regional embassies.

The team finally arrived in Monterrey on March 21 after a 25-hour journey that included navigating travel restrictions and a stopover in Portugal.

Congo advances

Congo scored in extra time to edge Jamaica 1-0 earlier Tuesday to become the 47th of that will play at the .

Axel Tuanzebe scored following a corner kick in the 100th minute. The Jamaican defenders failed to clear the ball and Tuanzebe, who plays for Burnley in the English Premier League tapped it into the net.

Congo has never played in a World Cup under that name, although it participated in the 1974 edition in Germany as Zaire.

With its victory in the intercontinental playoff at the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico, Congo completed Group K at the World Cup, where it will face Colombia, Portugal, and Uzbekistan.

鈥淲e鈥檙e going to enjoy the qualification, but we鈥檒l keep working. We know we鈥檒l be facing top nations who play in the World Cup every four years,” Congo captain Chancel Mbemba said. “We鈥檒l stay humble, keep our feet on the ground, and continue to work. We鈥檒l give everything to make our supporters and our people proud.鈥

The Jamaica team, known as the Reggae Boyz, missed out on what would have been a second World Cup appearance.

NASA is shooting for the moon. A guide to the Artemis II mission /national/2026/04/nasa-is-shooting-for-the-moon-a-guide-to-the-artemis-ii-mission/ Wed, 01 Apr 2026 06:48:09 +0000 /?p=29099533&preview=true&preview_id=29099533 CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) 鈥 It鈥檚 humanity鈥檚 since 1972.

In a , NASA鈥檚 Artemis II mission will on a lunar fly-around. They鈥檒l hurtle several thousand miles beyond the moon, hang a U-turn and then come straight back. No circling around the moon, no stopping for a moonwalk 鈥 just a quick out-and-back lasting less than 10 days.

NASA promises more boot prints in the gray lunar dust, but not before a couple practice missions. The upcoming test flight by Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen is the first step in settling the moon this time around.

Here鈥檚 a snapshot of the Artemis II mission.

The Artemis astronauts are a diverse and international crew

The moon is about to welcome its first woman, first person of color and first non-American.

Koch already holds the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman. During her 328-day mission at the International Space Station spanning 2019 and 2020, she took part in the first all-female spacewalk.

Glover, a Navy test pilot, was the first Black astronaut to live and work aboard the space station in 2020 and 2021. He also was one of the first astronauts to launch with SpaceX.

The Canadian Space Agency鈥檚 Hansen, a former fighter pilot, is the lone space rookie. Their commander is Wiseman, a retired Navy captain who lived aboard the space station in 2014 and later headed NASA鈥檚 astronaut corps. They range in age from 47 to 50.

The Space Launch System is more powerful than the Saturn V rocket

NASA鈥檚 new Space Launch System rocket stands 322 feet (98 meters), shorter than the Apollo program鈥檚 Saturn V rocket but more powerful at liftoff thanks to a pair of strap-on boosters. Atop the rocket is the Orion capsule carrying the astronauts.

Made of salvaged space shuttle engines and other parts, the SLS uses the same fuel 鈥 liquid hydrogen 鈥 as the shuttles did. Hydrogen leaks repeatedly grounded the shuttles as well as the first SLS rocket test without astronauts aboard in 2022. More than three years later, Artemis II suffered the same hydrogen leaks during a February fueling practice run, missing the first launch window. A repeat of helium-flow issues bumped the mission into April.

How Artemis II will fly around the moon

After liftoff, the astronauts will spend the first 25 hours circling Earth in a high, lopsided orbit. They鈥檒l use the separated upper stage as a target, steering their Orion capsule around it as docking practice for future moonshots. Instead of fancy range finders, they’ll rely on their eyes to judge the gap, venturing no closer than 33 feet (10 meters) to the stage.

鈥淪ometimes simple stuff is the best,鈥 Wiseman said.

If all goes as planned, Orion’s main engine will hurl the crew to the moon some 244,000 miles (393,000 kilometers) away. This free-return trajectory made famous in Apollo 13 relies on the moon and Earth鈥檚 gravity, minimizing the need for fuel.

On flight day six, Orion will reach its farthermost point from Earth as it sails 5,000 miles (8,000 kilometers) beyond the moon. That will surpass Apollo 13鈥檚 distance record, making Artemis astronauts the most remote travelers. After emerging from behind the moon, the crew will head straight home with a splashdown on flight day 10 鈥 nine days, one hour and 46 minutes after liftoff.

What to expect during the Artemis flyby

The Artemis II crew may behold never-before-seen regions of the lunar far side 鈥 with the moon appearing the size of a basketball at arm鈥檚 length during the closest part of the roughly six-hour flyby. They鈥檝e been poring over maps and satellite images of the lunar far side and anticipate a photo frenzy. Their lunar mentor is NASA geologist Kelsey Young, who will monitor the flyby from Mission Control in Houston.

鈥淭he moon is like such a unifying thing,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hat we’re doing with this mission is going to bring that a little closer to everybody around the world.鈥

Besides professional cameras, they鈥檒l carry the latest smartphones. NASA鈥檚 new administrator Jared Isaacman added smartphones to the mission for 鈥渋nspiring鈥 picture-taking.

While NASA and private companies have focused over the years on reaching the moon’s near side 鈥 the side that constantly faces Earth 鈥 only China has planted landers on the far side. That makes the astronauts’ observations of the lunar far side all the more valuable for NASA.

Artemis astronauts will splash back down to Earth

Like Apollo, the Artemis mission ends with a splashdown homecoming into the Pacific.

All eyes will be on Orion鈥檚 heat shield as the capsule plunges through the atmosphere. It鈥檚 the part of the spacecraft that took the biggest beating during 2022鈥檚 test flight, with charred chunks gouged out. The heat shield is being retooled for future capsules but remains the original design for Artemis II.

NASA is limiting the heat exposure during reentry by shortening the capsule鈥檚 atmospheric descent. Navy recovery ships will be stationed off the coast of San Diego as Orion parachutes into the ocean.

The Latest: Trump says the military could end its Iran offensive in 2 to 3 weeks /national/2026/04/the-latest-trump-says-the-military-could-end-its-iran-offensive-in-2-to-3-weeks/ Wed, 01 Apr 2026 06:46:39 +0000 /?p=29102446&preview=true&preview_id=29102446 U.S. President Donald Trump said the military could end its Iran offensive in two to three weeks and will shift responsibility for the Strait of Hormuz to countries that rely on it for oil and shipping as the White House announced a prime-time presidential address Wednesday evening on the war.

Trump expressed frustration Tuesday with allies who have been unwilling to do more to support the U.S. war effort, telling them to 鈥済o get your own oil. Trump recently has vacillated between insisting there is progress in diplomatic talks with Iran and .

He said the U.S. 鈥渨ill not have anything to do with鈥 what happens next in the vital waterway that has been closed by the Islamic Republic. Instead, he told reporters, the responsibility for keeping the strait open will rest with countries that rely on it. Gulf states rely on the waterway for both exports and imports, including food, and 20 percent of the world’s oil supply flows through it.

U.S. gas prices jumped past an average of for the first time since 2022 on Tuesday, as the Iran war continues to . Analysts say those high fuel costs will trickle into groceries as businesses鈥 transportation and packaging costs pile up.

Here is the latest:

Houthis say the fired missile barrage toward southern Israel

The Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen said Wednesday they fired a barrage of ballistic missiles toward Israel.

Air raid sirens went off in southern Israel in the early morning, from Beersheba to the Mediterranean coast following the launch. There were no immediate reports of impacts.

Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree, a military spokesman for the Houthis, said in a prerecorded statement that they fired at 鈥渟ensitive targets鈥 in southern Israel.

The attack is the third since the Houthis joined the war on Friday when they fired their first missile towards Israel since the U.S. and Israel launched massive airstrikes on Iran on Feb. 28.

Their entry has raised concerns that they could resume attacks on vessels in the Red Sea further disrupting the global shipping industry and sending oil prices much higher

Drone attack kills Bangladeshi national in UAE

A drone attack has killed a citizen of Bangladesh in Fujairah, one of the UAE鈥檚 seven emirates, authorities said.

He was killed Wednesday when Emirati air defense systems intercepted a drone, and shrapnel landed in a farm, the Fujairah media office said.

The fatality has brought the death toll in the UAE to nine civilians and two soldiers. A Moroccan contractor with the UAE army was also killed in Bahrain.

Earlier Saudi Arabia said it had destroyed two Iranian drones.

2 children among at least 3 people injured in missile attack on Israel

Emergency personnel said an 11-year-old girl was severely wounded in central Israel in the latest missile attack from Iran.

Two more people suffered moderate injuries including a 13-year-old boy and a 36-year-old woman, according to Israel鈥檚 Magen David Adom rescue services.

Iran鈥檚 foreign minister acknowledges receiving messages from US envoy

Iran鈥檚 foreign minister has acknowledged receiving direct messages from U.S. Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff.

The comments by Abbas Araghchi came in an interview with pan-Arab broadcaster Al Jazeera aired late Tuesday. He insisted that the messages didn鈥檛 constitute negotiations.

U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly described Iran and America has having talks over the war, while Pakistan has been a key intermediary along with Egypt and Turkey during the conflict.

鈥淚 receive messages from Witkoff directly, as before, and this does not mean that we are in negotiations,鈥 he said.

He added: 鈥淲e do not have any faith that negotiations with the U.S. will yield any results. The trust level is at zero.鈥

Asked about a possible ground offensive by the U.S., Araghchi said 鈥渨e are waiting for them.鈥

鈥淲e know very well how to defend ourselves,鈥 Araghchi reportedly told the Qatar-based broadcaster. 鈥淚n a ground war, we can do it even better. We are completely ready to confront any sort of ground attack. We hope they do not make such a mistake.鈥

At least 5 killed by Israeli strike in Beirut neighborhood

Lebanon鈥檚 Health Ministry said in a preliminary count early Wednesday 21 people were also wounded in the strike in Jnah.

The strike came without warning, and Israel did not declare the target. When it does, it often says it is targeting operatives from the Hezbollah militant group.

Emergency workers rushed to the scene to search for victims.

Israel warns of incoming Yemeni missile attack

Israel鈥檚 military warned the public Wednesday a missile was incoming from Yemen, yet another attack from the country鈥檚 Houthi rebels who have just entered the war on Iran鈥檚 side.

Air raid sirens went off in southern Israel, from Beersheba to the Mediterranean coast.

The warning, just around dawn, broke a long lull, more than 19 hours since the last time Israel鈥檚 military warned of an incoming missile launch from Iran, and more than six hours from the last alarms in the northern part of Israel, which in past days received near-constant fire from Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Iranian drone attack starts fire at Kuwait International Airport

A drone attack by Iran and its allies hit a fuel tank at Kuwait International Airport, sparking a fire, authorities said.

The state-run KUNA news agency said the attack early Wednesday sparked a 鈥渓arge fire鈥 at the airport.

It said there were no immediate injuries from the attack and firefighters were working to control the blaze.

Kuwait International Airport has been attacked before by Iran during the war. The KUNA report suggested the attack may have been launched by Iranian-supported militias in Iraq with Tehran鈥檚 support.

In another strike, Bahrain said early on Wednesday morning that it was working to extinguish a fire at a business facility that resulted from an Iranian attack.

Israel strikes factory in Iran it alleges supplies fentanyl for chemical weapons

Israel said early Wednesday it struck a plant supplying Iran鈥檚 theocracy with fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, to allegedly use in a chemical weapons program. Iran acknowledged the strike on Tofigh Daru factory, but insisted it only supplied 鈥渉ospital drugs鈥 used in medical operations.

The strike happened Tuesday, both the Israelis and the Iranians said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi posted a picture of the factory in Tehran, writing on X: 鈥淭he war criminals in Israel are now openly and unashamedly bombing pharmaceutical companies.鈥

Hospitals extensively use fentanyl to treat severe pain. But a small amount of the drug can be fatal.

Both Israel and the United States have warned in recent years Iran was experimenting with fentanyl in munitions. The U.S. previously pointed to Iranian academic research studying how Russia likely used a fentanyl derivative during the 2002 Moscow theater hostage seizure by Chechen militants.

Israel alleged Tofigh Daru supplied fentanyl to an advanced research institute in Tehran, known by its acronym SPND. The U.S alleges SPND has conducted research and testing that could be applicable to the development of nuclear explosive devices and other weapons.

Major airlines in United Arab Emirates say country is barring Iranian travelers

The United Arab Emirates has barred Iranians from entering or transiting the country as the war rages, three major airlines said Wednesday.

Long-haul carriers Emirates and Etihad, as well as the lower-cost airline FlyDubai, made the announcements on their websites.

Entry rules can sometimes be opaque in the autocratic United Arab Emirates, a federation of seven sheikhdoms, the three airlines agreed on the order. It said holders of 10-year Golden Visa residency permits could still enter the country.

Authorities have offered no official comment. But Dubai has already shut down the city-state鈥檚 Iranian Hospital and Iranian Club, institutions that date back to the time of the shah.

驴Se est谩 posicionando China para convertirse en un mediador de paz entre Estados Unidos e 滨谤谩苍? /news/2026/04/se-esta-posicionando-china-para-convertirse-en-un-mediador-de-paz-entre-estados-unidos-e-iran/ Wed, 01 Apr 2026 06:46:23 +0000 /?p=29102787&preview=true&preview_id=29102787 Mientras la se prolonga por segundo mes, lastrando la sin que se vislumbre una salida, surgen cada vez m谩s preguntas sobre el papel que est谩 dispuesta a desempe帽ar China, una potencia mundial y socio diplom谩tico de 滨谤谩苍.

Al mismo tiempo, el ministro de Asuntos Exteriores, Abbas Araghchi, afirm贸 que 滨谤谩苍 est谩 preparado para 鈥渁l menos seis meses鈥 de guerra.

No est谩 claro qu茅 implicar铆a tal acuerdo.

Aun as铆, 滨谤谩苍 no parece un escenario probable para tal inversi贸n鈥, afirm贸 Zhao.

Iran hits tanker off coast of Qatar, Kuwait airport and Israel kills 5 in Beirut attack /world/2026/04/iran-hits-tanker-off-coast-of-qatar-kuwait-airport-and-israel-kills-5-in-beirut-attack/ Wed, 01 Apr 2026 06:40:34 +0000 /?p=29102772&preview=true&preview_id=29102772 DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) 鈥 Iran hit a tanker off the coast of Qatar and Kuwait International Airport early Wednesday as Tehran remained unrelenting in its attacks on its Gulf Arab neighbors, while acknowledging for the first time that Washington had been in direct contact about a possible ceasefire.

Israel sounded warnings of incoming fire from both Yemen and Iran, while launching its own attacks in Lebanon that killed at least five people.

With no sign of abating and more than 3,000 lives already lost, U.S. President Donald Trump suggested it could be over within two weeks even as he moved to bring to the region.

No signs of Iran relinquishing grip on Strait of Hormuz shipping

Trump has been under growing pressure to end the war as Iran鈥檚 through the Strait of Hormuz and its attacks on regional energy infrastructure have sent gas prices skyrocketing to their since 2022 and caused broad stock market fluctuations.

Iran throttled ship traffic through the strait, which leads from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean, after it was attacked by the U.S. and Israel on Feb. 28. In peacetime, a fifth of the world鈥檚 oil transits the strait and the spot price of Brent crude, the international standard, is up more than 40% since the start of the war, trading at more than $104 a barrel.

The U.S. has presented Iran with a 15-point plan aimed at bringing about a ceasefire, which includes a demand for the strait to be reopened. Iran鈥檚 own five-point response includes it retaining sovereignty over the waterway, and Trump on Tuesday suggested that the war could be brought to an end even with Iran still controlling the strait.

The U.S. 鈥渨ill not have anything to do with鈥 what happens in the Strait of Hormuz, instead telling reporters that the responsibility for keeping the vital waterway open would belong with countries that rely on it.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 not for us. That鈥檒l be for France. That鈥檒l be for whoever鈥檚 using the strait,鈥 Trump said.

It was not clear why Trump brought up France, since Europe receives very little oil shipped through the strait, with most going to Asian countries. The president plans a prime-time address on Wednesday.

Push for diplomatic solution showing little signs of progress

Trump, who has vacillated between insisting there is progress in diplomatic talks with Iran and threatening to widen the war, added that the U.S. is 鈥渇inishing the job鈥 in Iran and predicted it will be 鈥渕aybe two weeks, maybe a couple of days longer to do the job.鈥

Trump has warned that if a ceasefire is not reached 鈥渟hortly,鈥 and if the strait is not reopened, the U.S. would broaden its offensive, including by attacking the oil export hub and possibly .

Thousands of Marines and paratroopers have been ordered to the region in possible preparation for an assault in Kharg, though to reach the island by ship would mean transiting the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf, which Iran has threatened to mine.

In an interview with pan-Arab broadcaster Al Jazeera, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi acknowledged receiving direct messages from U.S. Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff. He insisted, however, that there were no direct negotiations and said Iran has no faith that talks with the U.S. could yield any results, saying 鈥渢he trust level is at zero.鈥

He warned against any attempt to launch a ground offensive, saying 鈥渨e are waiting for them.鈥

鈥淲e know very well how to defend ourselves,鈥 Araghchi said.

Iran hits tanker off Qatar’s coast and attacks other Gulf states

Early Wednesday a tanker off the coast of Qatar was hit with a projectile, the British military鈥檚 United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said. The crew was reportedly unharmed. A fully-loaded Kuwaiti oil tanker came under attack off Dubai the day before, one of more than 20 ships attacked by Iran during the war.

Bahrain sounded two alerts for incoming missiles, and said an Iranian attack had caused a fire at a business facility.

In Kuwait, the state-run KUNA news agency said a drone had hit a fuel tank at Kuwait International Airport, sparking a 鈥渓arge fire鈥 that crews were working to control.

Two drones were also intercepted in Saudi Arabia, which has come under repeated Iranian attack, and air raid sirens sounded in Israel though there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Israel hits Iranian fentanyl plant and kills 5 in strikes on Beirut

In Iran, Israel said it had hit a plant producing fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, to allegedly be used in a chemical weapons program. Iran acknowledged the strike on Tofigh Daru factory, but insisted it only supplied 鈥渉ospital drugs鈥 used for medical purposes.

The strike happened Tuesday, both the Israelis and the Iranians said.

Hospitals extensively use fentanyl to treat severe pain. But a small amount of the drug can be fatal.

Both Israel and the United States have alleged in recent years that Iran was experimenting with fentanyl in munitions.

In Beirut, at least five people were killed in an Israeli strike on a Beirut neighborhood. Lebanon鈥檚 Health Ministry said another 21 people were wounded.

Israel invaded southern Lebanon after the Iran-linked Hezbollah militant group began launching missiles into northern Israel days after the outbreak of the wider war. Many Lebanese fear .

More than 1,200 people in Lebanon and more than 1 million displaced, according to authorities. Ten Israeli soldiers have also died there.

In Iran, authorities say more than 1,900 people have been killed, while 19 have been reported dead in Israel.

Since the Iran war began, 13 U.S. have been killed and 348 wounded, six seriously, according to U.S. Central Command.

More than two dozen people have died in Gulf states and the occupied West Bank.

Italy is out again. The 4-time champion misses 3rd straight World Cup with shootout loss in Bosnia /sports/2026/04/decisive-day-for-struggling-four-time-champion-italy-in-world-cup-playoff-at-bosnia/ Wed, 01 Apr 2026 06:39:18 +0000 /?p=29099210&preview=true&preview_id=29099210 One of has reached a once-unfathomable low.

failed to qualify for a third straight after getting beat in a penalty shootout at 66th-ranked in the on Tuesday.

Moise Kean scored early on for Italy but then Azzurri center back Alessandro Bastoni was sent off with a direct red card before halftime and Bosnia substitute Haris Tabakovic equalized in the 79th to send the game into extra time at 1-1.

The defeat added more misery for Italy鈥檚 once-proud national team after being eliminated by and , respectively, in the qualifying playoffs for the last two World Cups.

鈥淚t鈥檚 too easy to say what鈥檚 working and what鈥檚 not working,鈥 Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso said. 鈥淭he fact is that Italy has failed to qualify for three World Cups. We鈥檙e having a tough time achieving our goals, both with the national team and with our clubs.鈥

Bosnia won the shootout 4-1 and qualified for the first time since 2014 鈥 its only previous appearance.

In the shootout, Pio Esposito and Bryan Cristante missed their spot kicks and U.S.-born Esmir Bajraktarevi膰 converted the decisive penalty for Bosnia.

鈥淲e still don鈥檛 believe it 鈥 that we鈥檙e out and that it happened in this manner,鈥 Italy defender Leonardo Spinazzola said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 upsetting for everyone. For us, for our families, and for all the kids who have never seen Italy at a World Cup.鈥

In Tuesday鈥檚 other European playoff finals, Sweden, Turkey and the Czech Republic each qualified. Sweden beat Poland 3-2; Turkey beat Kosovo 1-0; and the Czechs beat Denmark in a shootout.

Italy’s latest ouster means that the 1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006 champions will go at least 16 years without even playing a match at soccer鈥檚 biggest event.

Italy鈥檚 World Cup struggles go back all the way to 2010 and 2014, having failed to advance from its group on both occasions. Although the Azzurri did win the European Championship in 2021.

Italy鈥檚 last World Cup knockout match was when it won the title in 2006 by beating France in a penalty shootout.

鈥淲e realize we’re in a huge crisis,鈥 Italian soccer federation president Gabriele Gravina said.

The only other World Cup that Italy did not qualify for was in 1958.

Lost generation

An entire generation 鈥 basically anyone under 15 鈥 has no memory of the last time Italy played in the World Cup: An elimination loss to Uruguay in 2014 in Brazil remembered for Luis Suarez鈥檚 bite of Giorgio Chiellini鈥檚 shoulder.

None of Italy鈥檚 current players have participated in a World Cup finals.

The defeat will raise questions about the status of Gattuso, who took over from the fired Luciano Spalletti in June with the squad already in crisis mode following a defeat at Norway in its opening qualifier.

The Azzurri then went on a six-match winning streak before losing again to Norway in November to finish second in their group and end up in the playoffs again.

Gattuso鈥檚 Italy overcame a nervy scoreless first half to beat Northern Ireland 2-0 at home in last week鈥檚 playoff semifinals. But the Azzurri struggled even more against Bosnia inside the intimate but imposing 14,000-seat Bilino Polje Stadium in Zenica, which is surrounded by apartment towers overlooking the field.

鈥淚 want to personally apologize since we didn鈥檛 make it,鈥 Gattuso said. 鈥淭oday talking about my future is not important. Today it was important to get to the World Cup.鈥

Mismatch on paper

On paper, it was a massive mismatch between 12th-ranked Italy and Bosnia, which is ranked 54 places below the Azzurri by FIFA.

Italy has a population of nearly 60 million. Bosnia鈥檚 is about 3.5 million.

The combined club salaries of Italy鈥檚 players total nearly 1 billion euros ($1.16 billion). Bosnia鈥檚 total is a seventh of that.

Bajraktarevi膰, who had the winning penalty, was born in Appleton, Wisconsin. He made his U.S. debut in a January 2024 friendly against Slovenia and then switched affiliation that August.

Gyokeres the savior for Sweden

Viktor Gyokeres has sent Sweden back to the World Cup.

The Arsenal striker scored in the 88th minute to earn the Swedes a 3-2 win over Poland, five days after netting a hat trick in the playoff semifinal victory over Ukraine.

Poland great Robert Lewandowski, at age 37, was hoping to qualify for what would likely have been his final World Cup.

Former Chelsea and West Ham coach Graham Potter was hired by Sweden last year 鈥 鈥 with one goal: to get the team to the World Cup. He has succeeded.

Sweden reached the quarterfinals in its last World Cup appearance, in 2018.

No dream debut for Kosovo

Turkey will be in the United States鈥 group at the World Cup after winning 1-0 at Kosovo to reach soccer鈥檚 biggest stage for the first time since 2002.

The hosts were hoping to qualify for the World Cup for the first time, fewer than 10 years since the national team was out of the international soccer family.

It was in May 2016 that Kosovo and Gibraltar were voted into FIFA as its 210th and 211th member federations. That was eight years after Kosovo declared independence from Serbia.

Kosovo had the best chance of an entertaining first half but Turkey goalkeeper U臒urcan 脟ak谋r pulled off a superb one-handed save to push Fisnik Asllani鈥檚 strike onto the crossbar.

Turkey got the breakthrough eight minutes into the second half. Kerem Akt眉rko臒lu got finest of touches to ensure Orkun K枚k莽眉鈥檚 cross-shot went into the far bottom corner.

Turkey joins the U.S. in Group D, along with Paraguay and Australia.

Long wait ended

The Czech Republic reached its first World Cup since 2006 with a penalty shootout victory over Denmark following a 2-2 draw.

Michal Sadilek converted the winning spotkick in the 3-1 penalty shootout success. It was the Czech Republic鈥檚 second straight victory on penalties after also prevailing on spotkicks against Ireland in the semifinal.

The Czech Republic will face co-hosts Mexico, South Africa and South Korea in Group A.

Hiker’s dog lost in a wild New Zealand forest rescued by helicopter after strangers fund search /trending-now/2026/04/hikers-dog-lost-in-a-wild-new-zealand-forest-rescued-by-helicopter-after-strangers-fund-search/ Wed, 01 Apr 2026 06:37:47 +0000 /?p=29102752&preview=true&preview_id=29102752 WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) 鈥 When a hiker fell from a 55-meter (180-foot) waterfall in wild New Zealand bush, rescuers were forced to evacuate the badly hurt woman without her dog, which couldn’t be found. After strangers raised thousands of dollars for a search, border collie Molly was flown to safety by a helicopter pilot who was determined to reunite pet and owner.

A week earlier, an emergency rescue helicopter found the woman with bruises and lacerations after a fall at a rocky spot at the waterfall on the South Island鈥檚 West Coast. She was airlifted on March 24 but they were forced to leave without her pet.

Molly was bedraggled and hungry when she was found Tuesday, just a few meters from the spot where the hiker had been lucky to survive.

鈥淚 contacted her in hospital and said I鈥檇 go for a look for it,鈥 said Matt Newton, the owner-operator of Precision Helicopters New Zealand, which is based at Hokitika Gorge near the Arahura River where Molly went missing. 鈥淚 went and looked for the dog several times and no avail.鈥

Unwilling to give up, Newton and his family launched a fundraiser to pay for more flying hours and advanced search gear. Offers of help and donations poured in, with strangers pledging more than 11,000 New Zealand dollars ($6,300) for a search.

It was enough to fund three more hours in a helicopter using thermal imaging equipment. On Tuesday, Newton took to the skies with a veterinary nurse, volunteer searchers and a dog named Bingo in a renewed search for Molly.

鈥淲e struck jackpot within about an hour,鈥 he said. 鈥淎s we made our way up the river, we could see the dog in the thermal and then we could visually see it.鈥

There had been no sign of Molly at the waterfall when Newton previously searched the spot, he said. It wasn鈥檛 clear if the dog had also fallen from the waterfall or if she had eventually made her way to the spot where her injured owner landed.

The helicopter dropped low enough for a volunteer to disembark with the rescue dog Bingo to help coax Molly to safety and keep her calm.

Newton thought the dog had survived by eating feral animals during her week in the wilderness.

鈥淪he knew what we were up to, I think,鈥 he said. 鈥淪he behaved real well. She didn鈥檛 run away and she was pleased to be rescued.鈥

The dog was in 鈥渟urprisingly good condition,鈥 the pilot said. He sent word back to the helicopter base, where other volunteers waited to take turns in the search. 鈥淚nstead we just had a big barbecue and all had a cuddle with Molly.”

Hours after the dog鈥檚 rescue, her owner, still battered from her fall, arrived for a tearful reunion.

鈥淚 think that鈥檒l speed up her healing process somewhat,鈥 Newton said. 鈥淗aving your dog back, that鈥檚 for sure.鈥

El Grupo H cuenta con dos campeones, 贰蝉辫补帽补 y Uruguay.
